The job of personal assistant isn’t always an easy one. Depending on who you end up working for, it can involve long days with many tasks to juggle. It can also be a lot of pressure. In the business world, while the job is relatively low down on the totem pole in terms of stature, a wrong move by a personal assistant can be very costly. For domestic personal assistants, mistakes or misunderstandings can result in great difficulties for someone’s personal or family life.
Understanding:
This is both in regards to being understanding on an emotional level, but also in a more literal level. There will likely be a lot of instructions given to a personal assistant throughout a given day and it’s their job to understand those instructions thoroughly so that everything is done to the boss’s liking.
Intuitive:
Not everyone can give clear instructions. This is especially true with a lot of people who hire personal assistants. It’s not necessarily a flaw on their part but just a symptom of the fact that they are so busy. Many people will expect their assistants to figure out what they want with very little direction. Calling on the phone every five minutes to double check something defeats the purpose of the job.
Resourceful:
A personal assistant’s job is rarely consistent or easily defined. That means they will often be called upon to do things that they aren’t likely familiar with, and letting the boss down isn’t an option. Therefore, a PA needs to know how to find the answers whenever questions arise.
