There are thousands of free games to play online, whose challenges range from testing one’s math skills to destroying virtual mutant insects. There are more games being designed every day, and often new games are designed following suggestions from players. This means that there is a game or two for almost everyone, maybe including even grumpy people who say that they don’t like games! These activities are great for relieving stress and distracting us from other problems at the end of the day. If a player is concentrating on besting a giant cockroach, for example, he or she cannot be simultaneously thinking about problems at work, or the cockroach will win.
There is nothing particularly new about the concept of free online games, except that the games in general have matured over the past few years. Good designers no longer work exclusively in the field of pay-to-play games. In addition, free games now offer the ability to compete with other players online, a feature that was formerly also exclusive to the paid games. Using Facebook, friends and other competitors can comment, taunt each other, issue challenges, and even post their names and photos when they become champions.
Every player was a novice once - admit it - and today’s novice players should play free games first to find out what they really enjoy. Not every one is cut out to be a virtual cyberbug hunter, football player or mind reader. Free games are designed for children of all ages, so it is good to start slow and small, working one’s way up as skills and familiarity increase. Novices should expect to get whipped a few times at first; if the game was not challenging no one would play it for long. Besides, mental challenges are what take our minds off other things, and that’s one big reason we play games in the first place.
In the more distant past, there was a time when even the simple act of reading was considered to be a waste of time because it was not the same as “working.” Even while that attitude was popular, the game of baseball was being invented. Today, when those of us who still have jobs are working harder than before just to stay even, enjoying a free video game in the evening is surely not something that will lead to our downfall. Such simple pleasures may, in fact, make us better prepared to face the challenges of tomorrow.
