Learning to Shop in a Souq

There are many new and fantastic things and places to discover in the Middle East.  One can plan a trip there or even consider the possibility of relocation to one of the many fast growing cities that are within this region.  There are a host of activities to discover and one of the many highlights that one can explore is to learn to shop in a souq.

A souq is an open commercial market that is mostly associated with a Muslim or Arabic country.  In a thriving and modern city like Dubai for example, one can still find these type of shopping ventures that have existed for thousands of years.  To shop in a souq is to hearken back to another age when most all transactions were handled in open markets such as these.  Almost all goods and services were bartered for and exchanged in these open air venues.  Even in these modern times, the souq is a a popular and thriving economic place to explore.  When one begins to shop in a souq, one can learn all types of information about how the dynamics of these markets operate and how to integrate within the system.

There are seasonal souqs that are polarized around religious and festive holidays and there are permanent souqs that are available all year around.  In the case of the latter, these are patterned out to provided specific places for certain goods or services.  For example, one would go clothes shopping in a fabric souq or purchase jewelry in a gold or silver souq.  Part of the learning process of shopping within these regions is to understand the customs and manners by which the local economies function and to know the “ins and out” of this type of market system.  If one is to shop in a souq, you will be following the footsteps of literally millions of people beforehand. 

Certainly, one can visit and engage in shopping in many commercial malls across the Middle East regions but to shop in a souq is a special venture that is enjoyable in more ways than simply from a retail standpoint.  One can learn a great deal about the cultures and ways of a particular city and country simply by pursuing this as an option.
