Top ranking government officials enjoyed smoking Cohibas in 1968. That is when they first came on the market. Thanks to their growth and popularity many people are still enjoying them today. You do not have to be a Cuban government official to enjoy them now. These cigars are can be found worldwide, since 1982.
Fidel Castro used to give Cohibas as diplomatic gifts. They were manufactured, at that time, as a private brand. High level government officials in the Communist Party of Cuba and Castro had a steady supply of these cigars. They were not intended, at that time, to be sold to the general public. Because of the access, of these Cohibas, being limited to certain people; these products appeared to develop a unique status power. If you were seen smoking one, you were noticed for it.
Castro’s body guard was named Bienvenido Perez. Castro loved the smell of his body guard’s smoke. It was at that time that Castro asked his body guard where he purchased the amazing cigars. His body guard told him about a man named Eduardo Rivera; this man made the products for his friend. Castro spoke with Rivera about working for him personally. Rivera started working, for Castro, with five other rollers in a former diplomatic mansion; that is how things started for the company. Soon it turned into a factory, and it became the first cigar factory to be staffed by women in Cuba.
It was in 1982 that Castro started selling the products to the public. Today Cohiba produces the Mini and the Club. These cigars are manufactured by machines. Though, things have changed through the years, people can still enjoy a bit of the past by purchasing one of these products. The premium cigars are produced in Cuba. Then there is also the General Cigar that is produced in Dominican Republic. You can find these cigars in shops around the world or on the internet. You may have seen celebrities enjoying them or you may have seen one lit up in a movie. They are popular not only for their stories, but for the quality of their ingredients. If you have not tried one, you might want to see what you are missing.
